THE TEMPLE

You know I want your lovin'.
Why play so hard to get? You know you really want me.
You know you can't forget
The night we held each other's hands,
While that drunk Irish quartet
Sang "Blue Eyes Cryin".
And that sad refrain
Sparked a night I won't regret.

We walked into the Full Moon Pub
Hand in hand and arm in arm.
You challenged me to a game of darts
And you aimed straight for my heart.
I fell for your bright blue eyes.
I fell for all your charms.
And when the juke box played
"Blue Eyes Cryin"
That's when I fell apart.

Now I wait so patiently,
Like a friend outside your door;
Like a hobo striking matchsticks
To light the flame you knew before;
Like a dancer twirling silently
Trying to call you to the floor;
Like a priest fasting at the temple With the key you're looking for.

Some people love like bankers:
You must first make a deposit,
Before you can earn their trust,
Before you can get their interest.
Me I spill it freely,
There's always room for another guest.
And when the Irish girl
Strummed her harp
I saw you and then I lost it.

So why run off to the city?
Why lose yourself in the lights?
The constable has quite a levy
That'll lock your soul up tight.
Just so you know, I'm always here
Morning, noon or night.
And the Irish girl
Has promised me
"Blue Eyes Cryin" will be sung tonight.

Song inspired by Hafiz' poem "Where Dolphins Dance", translated by Daniel Ladinsky from the collection of Hafiz' poems, "The Subject Tonight Is Love."
